This landmark move marks the first time all participating schools from the county will don uniform kits branded with the message “Visit Kakamega,” a tourism promotion slogan that was previously exclusive to Butere Girls.
By branding the entire contingent, the county aims to turn every sports person into a walking tourism ambassador.
The initiative comes at a pivotal time, with Kakamega set to host two major secondary school competitions this year, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national Term Two games from Saturday, 26 July to Sunday 3, August, and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) championships from Monday, 14 to Saturday, 26 August.
The official launch of the new kits and the ceremonial flagging-off of the teams will take place on Wednesday, 9 July, at St. Peter’s Mumias Boys, ahead of the regional showdown.
KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi last week confirmed that preparations for the national and regional events are well underway.
“We were impressed by the playing and accommodation facilities for the two events,” he said after inspecting various venues in Kakamega town.
However, Ngugi raised concerns over the delayed works at Bukhungu Stadium, which is expected to host both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the football finals.
“The contractor assured us that they will complete the laying of the artificial turf by July 30,” he said.
The upcoming games will be spread across various venues in Kakamega County. Bukhungu Stadium, Mumias Sports Complex, Kakamega High School, and Mukumu Boys will host football matches, while The Bull Ring is set to stage the rugby sevens and 15s contests.
Police Canteen will serve as the basketball venue, with its upgrades nearing completion. Swimming events will take place at two locations, the newly completed 25-metre pool at St. Peter’s Mumias Primary and the 50-metre pool under construction at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
MMUST will also host indoor games, netball, and the national and FEASSA secretariats. Additionally, the lawn tennis court at Kakamega High School has been upgraded in preparation for the events.
The boys’ teams will be accommodated at MMUST, while the girls will stay at Mukumu Girls’.
Ngugi also praised the county’s efforts in upgrading the lawn tennis court at Kakamega High School, reflecting the broader ambition to present Kakamega as not just a sporting hub but also a destination of choice.
Meanwhile, FEASSA has expanded its sporting program this year to include cricket, beach football, beach volleyball, scrabble, and chess, as Kenya looks to reclaim the regional title from Uganda.
